Fall 2002 Newsletter

The Southeast Leonberger Club's Newsletter features articles from the Board of Directors. Each officer shares information about their love of the breed, and their Leo-companions.
Please enjoy.

President: Sandra Ruzycki
We have had the honor and privilege of sharing our life with Darius von Jagen for almost 6 years now. He has filled our life with adventure, joy, and laughter. We had wanted a giant breed dog, but knew all about the drooling issues. With the heat and humidity here in Florida, we definately needed a non-drooling dog. Research and conversations brought us to the decision to add a Leonberger to our household. Darius is truly a "gentle giant," and a wonderful ambassador of the breed. He entertains our infant son, and is known throughout our community by children, golfers, police officers, and squirrels.
Darius has introduced us to many new friends, and continues to surprise us with his intelligience, patience, and love. He loves to play, and the cooler Florida weather brings out his bouncy, prancing exurberance! We are truly blessed to have Darius in our lives.

Iko & Jana

My husband and I are owned by two Leonbergers. Iko is 6 and Jana is 5 years old, both females.I have taken them to several obedience classes and they both earned their CGC. Jana has been a therapy dog ever since she was 12 months old.
When we lived in Houston we used to visit several rehab centers. Here in Florida we have gotten involved with the Delta Society and make regular visits to a local hospital and a nursing home. I'm also involved with the Leonberger Health Foundation and Leo Rescue. I enjoy getting together with other Leo owners and their dogs.
Secretary: Lisa Purcell
I found the Leonberger breed while browsing through rare breeds on the web. I knew I wanted something big and hairy, friendly, and good with kids, but it definitely couldn't drool! Sophie came to us 3 years later.

Sasha & Sophie

I had decided I only wanted a male puppy, but Sophie stole my heart, and that was that.
About a year later I decided she really needed a dog of her own, so we brought Sasha home from the local humane society. They hit it off immediately and have been great entertainment for each other. Both are excellent dogs and are wonderful with the new human baby.
Membership Chair: Nan Forehand
I'm Nan Forehand, the newest and least experienced person on the Board. My husband, Harry (nickname Simon) and I live in the woods near Tigerville, SC, about 20 miles north of Greenville, SC. I'm retired but working at home as a "domestic engineer" while Simon designs health care facilities in Spartanburg, SC. I first learned of Leonbergers about ten years ago when I saw them mentioned in Dog World magazine. My search for more information led me to Susan Grosslight, who lives less than two hours from me.She was kind enough to allow me to visit and meet her lovely dogs and play with a new litter of puppies.
It was love at first meeting. When my Bernese Mountain Dog died of Addison's Disease and complications, Susan had a litter planned and I was fortunate enough to be allowed to adopt Duncan von Jagen, one of the world's great dogs. Our household is completed with another Bernese Mountain Dog, Robinton (Robbie), and may soon be a permanent home to a stray dog, Tucker, for whom I've been caring.I have never shown a dog and my dogs are trained just well enough to be easy to live and travel with, but I do care deeply about protecting the health and temperament of such a wonderful breed of dogs as the Leonberger. I believe that the Southeast Leonberger Club can promote responsible dog

ownership and breeding practices as well as providing the means to communicate and gather with other caring Leonberger owners in the region.
